Join us for Billings Public Library's participation in the Copyist Program, a series of exciting art events held at local museums, galleries, and libraries Montana and Wyoming!
Local artists have been invited to station themselves under the library's oculus to study and reinterpret Isabelle Johnson's portrait of Ann Whitmack, former library director, in their own style and preferred medium. The goal of this program is to provide artists with a rare opportunity to closely study the original work of a notable artist and attempt to recreate it. Copyist programs are popular at galleries across the world because they allow artists a chance to develop their skills as they intimately engage with a rare work of art, and onlookers get to observe and interact with the artists as they work.
Artists have already been selected, but onlookers and participants-from-afar are welcome to attend (dry materials only, please!)
The copyist program has also visited the Western Heritage Center, Yellowstone Art Museum, and Yellowstone County Museum, and is scheduled to appear at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, WY!
