Sue Lawrence, author of Montana’s Memory Day, will read her story that celebrates adoption. Learn about book making, too!

Sue Lawrence is a Montanan with a southern accent. In 2017, she left behind a nursing career in Alabama to attend Rocky Mountain College and become a better writer. She’d never even visited Montana before, but she fell in love with it the day she arrived.

Sue’s picture book, MONTANA’S MEMORY DAY, is a nature-themed foster/adoption story, illustrated by Erika Wilson, a third-generation Montanan. Erika carved the pictures in this book out of sheets of linoleum using special woodworking tools, then painted the illustration prints with watercolor paints. All the scenes in this story—from Cottonwood trees at dawn to whittling sticks in front of a woodstove—were inspired by Erika’s family homestead along the Yellowstone River. Sue hopes you can picture yourself in the shoes of “Montana”—the kid in this story who’s named after our beloved state—because it means “mountain” and “strength.”
