Event Details

Copper made Butte the "richest hill on earth" during the late-19th and early-20th century, but strong labor movements made that same city the "Gibraltar" of trade unionism. How did these two realities exist simultaneously, and what efforts went into preserving/dismantling them? The Billings Public Library invites you to a presentation with Rich Aarstad, State Archivist with the Montana Historical Society, who will discuss these topics in detail on October 11, from 6:00-7:00PM in the Library Community Room. This event is free and open to the public. Come and learn about our state's long, fascinating history with labor unrest, about workers' organized efforts to improve their working and living conditions, and the forces that stood in opposition. Bring your thoughts and questions!

Rich Aarstad grew up in Libby, MT. He attained both his B.A. and M.A. from University of Montana, and has been with the Montana Historical Society since 2001. Rich started his career with the MHS as a Reference Historian, and has been the Montana State Archivist since 2021.
