Compelled to Create: Maneki-neko

In August of 2024, Dr. Michel Barrett brought a bit of Japanese folk art and tradition to the Montana Women’s Prison. Maneki-neko are Japanese talismans thought to bring good fortune and wealth to their owners. During this two-day class, each student created their own Maneki-neko using ink and colored pencil. Although the composition of the works look similar, look carefully and you'll notice that each cat has its own distinct look and personality!

These colorful creations will be displayed on our First-Five-Years wall throughout September!

Dr. Michael Barrett is an artist and educator who has taught and performed all over the world, including Rocky Mountain College, MSU-Billings, and MSU-Bozeman. His goal in bring art to all is to provide his students with a profound understanding and appreciation of the impact that art can have.
